Maya Yenn is an incredibly talented singer- songwriter and producer. Her spooky style of alt pop made a debut in June with the single ‘TipToe’. Maya is back again today with her latest single ‘ How Much Sadness Can You Swallow’
I spoke to Maya about where her love for music came from and her future ambitions.
“My Mum bought my Dad a rickety upright piano for his birthday one year when I was a kid and before I knew the first thing about music theory or how notes worked I was spending hours coming up with little compositions and songs. I just loved the language music gave me to express thoughts and ideas. I think that’s what’s amazing about music, to me it’s just emotion + magic.”
‘Tiptoe’ has a very unique and quirky sound in both the vocals and the production. Maya’s experimental style can be credited to her music influences.
“Radiohead were always my favourite band, but I also loved FKA twigs, Christine and the Queens, Jungle and Glass Animals. People are often surprised by this but I love rap and listen to a lot of Tyler the Creator, Ashnikko, Audrey Nuna and Tierra Whack. I think it’s always good to take influences from everywhere, even if it’s not music, sometimes even a photograph is enough to write a song.”
Maya writes and produces all of her own music. I asked her what the benefits of being a DIY musician are?
“The greatest advantage is definitely the creative freedom it gives you. You’re free to tell your story exactly the way you want to – it’s a lot of work! But I love all aspects of making music so it’s really fulfilling for me”.
Maya’s latest single ‘How Much Sadness Can You Swallow’ Is out today. Maya stated that this single was written in response to a nightmare she had. “Me and my partner work on the music videos together and we’ve been really ambitious on this next one. I’m a big fan of contemporary sci-fi and horror so we’re hoping to pay homage to that and bring in some more cinematic, sci-fi elements.”
‘How Much Sadness Can You Swallow’ is out today. Go and show it some love!
