It’s an exciting time for Stefanie Rummel as she is about to take her one woman show “Chansons’ to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The cabaret style show boasts the style and swagger which has adorned audiences the world. HER interviewed Stefanie to find out a bit more about this project and her musical inspirations.
Stefanie describes herself as a “I am a European triple threat entertainer: Award winning singer, character actress, dancer who performs in German, English and French. I write my own shows and songs which have been performed nationally and internationally.”
It’s evident that Stefanie is an all round incredible entertainer using her talent for culture and the arts to create an all round masterpiece. “Chansons” has won 1st place in the category “Chansons” at the German Rock and Pop Award 2022.
Stefanie stated that “Living in Germany, France and the US made me aware of the enriching subtle differences which open other perspectives of approaches of life. Since my childhood I have been many times in France, made friends, learned about traditions, different kinds of delicious food creations and different views of life.
“The music that I heard during those moments became part of me. My voice just followed the sounds I had in my mind. When a theatre asked me to produce a show with French Chansons – all those inspirations were there to put a charming musical cabaret together.”
The diverse musical inspirations that run through Chansons are incredibly unique to Stefanie and I think that is what makes this show so special and such a personal experience. With her background in Germany, France and the US Stefanie’s musical influences range far and wide.
“Songs, chansons and musical theatre pieces that tell stories are fascinating to me.”
“Musical theatre has had a major influence since I saw these shows in New York City at a young age. Singers like Barbra Streisand, Liza Minelli, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey, Ute Lemper I listened to and analysed vocally a lot. The French, English and German chanson from Kurt Weil, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Friedrich Holländer, and many musical theatre composers like Sondheim, Kander & Ebb, Styne, Bernstein, have touched my artistic paths regularly since I lived in these countries.”
During her career Stefanie has achieved a wealth of success taking “Chansons to Germany in 2019. The last two years Stefanie Rummel has performed online in cabarets in New York and San Francisco, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, CARTs, Lathi Fringe, Living Records Festival, New Zealand Fringe & Brighton Fringe Festival and live at the Reykjavik Fringe Festival.
“There are several places I loved: Conservatoire de Luxembourg, General Consulate of Germany New York, Reykjavik, Norway…. “
“I think even more important for me is the connection to the audience… A book was written because of a story of mine. One woman said she got hooked and forgot about time. A woman took strength in life through a song of mine… My show has been described this way: “Quality, legendary songs with the deep meanings attached give a gift of genuine benefit. As an educational music tour…anywhere. (Dall Wilson)”
“When this special spark is there and audiences come and are touched, that is the most beautiful gift you can get.”
